What I love about the holiday's is it is a reminder that we were once believers. Santa was this icon who through magic and with the help of some pretty dedicated elves, managed to bring hope and excitement to all children... that is who believed.
I just finished watching the movie "Polar Express" with my kids snuggled up with me on the couch. It is about a boy who no longer believes in Santa's existence, and then is hijacked aboard a midnight train all in the hopes that he will find it in his heart to believe.
My kids, who are 7 and 9 are starting to ask those hard questions, such as does Santa really exist. I've managed to side step this question, as I myself am not ready to give up the childhood wonder that has filled my kids hearts. Then one day, my son decided to follow his own heart and not listen to his classmates insistence on this so called truth and he instead decided that Santa has to exist, simply because he believed. I love that he still believes.
I believe in magic. I for one have seen amazing things happen in my life that I can not explain. People came into my life exactly when I needed them. Books popped up and offered me guidance right when I needed them. Rainbows came out during times of year you wouldn't expect to see one, all confirming that the decision I was about to make was the right one.
I have seen patients health status turn around in a blink of an eye all because they believed that it wasn't their time. I have a friend who got into every Physician Assistant (PA) school that she applied to (and there were around 15), with a G.P.A. of 3.81. Even though statistically the odds were against her giving how hard it is to get into PA schools, she got in because believed she would.
The gift in believing is it offers you hope, and without hope those negative thoughts that like to creep up with alarming frequency, have the right environment to take over our consciousness. So, really the point of believing is to bring a smile to your face. The luxury of believing is you enjoy your life in ways that you didn't think were possible. The benefit to believing is that you get to enjoy all that life has to offer you, filling you up with a lifetime of beautiful memories.
I believe. Santa taught me to believe, and I am so very thankful to keep this space in my heart for all the greatness that will most definately come my way all because I believe.
